It has been a life long passion of Werner, the founder and creator of Ashanti – Functional Fusion Art, to do something unique and to use his talents in a creative way. “We have taken a 1000 year old traditional method of manipulating bamboo and used it to create our canvases. We use inlays of eggshell, mother of pearl and other materials like coins, paper and stone, to create a truly unique art style.”
Each piece is hand made, with strips of bamboo and used to “build” the canvas. Many layers of paint are applied, with a layer of material laid into it to give it strength and to waterproof it. A special resin layer is applied before the artwork commences. The plates are all hand painted and the whole process can take between 4-6 weeks to complete, depending on the specific design and intricacy of the artwork. Our mission is to keep on developing new designs and never use one design twice.
The range of plates starts at 35cm in size and goes up to 100cm in diameter. Many of our client’s immediate reaction is that they are made of glass. This very fine smooth finish is obtained during the manufacturing process. How we achieve this however remains our secret.
